The unique connection between nature and culture

The Mayen-Koblenz district offers a unique connection between nature and culture. Rhein and Mosel, former volcanic activity and numerous lakes, forests and field landscapes characterize the cultural space. Over 400 monuments, 13 castles, fortresses and galleries reveal an extensive offering. Castles and palaces provide a fabulous backdrop, such as the Eltz castle, which not only pompously stands out from the landscape with its numerous little towers and oriels but is also accessible thanks to one of Germany’s most gorgeous hiking trails. Beside it lies Pyrmont castle, a true cultural experience that was also built in the style of the Staufer period and overlooks the Elzbach river, providing a breathtaking view from its castle keep. Palaces and castles play just as important of a role during the Rhein in Flammen (Rhine in Flames) large fireworks display in Koblenz. Many of these romantic-looking structures and Rhine sites can be observed via boat trips on the Rhine with closing fireworks in Koblenz, a 200-year tradition.

In addition, the district has numerous other castles and the Sayn palace, whose palace garden holds a butterfly park with tropical plants and hundreds of exotic butterflies, attracting numerous tourists every year. Another location worth mentioning is the Bürresheim palace, which is a few kilometers away from Mayern and has a special, impressive baroque garden. Besides historical buildings and monuments from the past centuries, breathtaking events and music events make the district come alive. From motorsports to music events to traditional markets with decades of history, there is a rich and extensive offering for young and old. At markets such as the Michelsmarkt in Andernach, visitors from roughly 280 dealers are presented with products ranging from sheep’s wool socks to household goods and clothing; this tradition historically dates to the year 1407. In addition to Germany’s most popular open-air festival, Rock am Ring, with numerous international bands, “Nacht der Vulkane” (Volcano Night) is also one of the district’s most notable highlights. Visitors are given a greater understanding of key topics in history, volcanology, archaeology and geology in a week with hikes through the lovely volcano landscape.

In addition to all the aforementioned highlights, many different music festivals that are known beyond the district are organized in a breathtaking atmosphere every year. Many different music styles are popular, from jazz and swing to classic music and folk concerts.

Furthermore, delicious wines and the region’s particular culinary delicacies characterize the district. Events coupled with high-quality Mosel wines and excellent Mosel cuisine offer your taste buds a true experience.

Under the motto “Pflücken erlaubt” (take your pick), the city of Andernach is pursuing an entirely new concept for designing its public spaces. Organic-quality crop plants are grown in public spaces to bring back nature to the city and handle the issue of nutrition in a healthy and conscious manner.
