The history of WFG MYK

Mayen-Koblenz: a strong business location, an up-and-coming region, surrounded by enchanting landscapes with a wide range of cultural and leisure activities. Promoting and preserving all this is the aim of the WFG, and has been for half a century now. And it is a success story. Together with the people of Mayen-Koblenz, the WFG has been involved in some fantastic projects over the past few years.

Foundation of the WFG
July 1971

On November 7, 1970, the district of Mayen-Koblenz was newly formed and only a few months passed before the WFG, based in Mayen, was founded on July 14, 1971. The aim was to promote the development and improvement of the economic and social structure in the district of Mayen-Koblenz with suitable measures.

In 1973, the district council decided to relocate the WFG to Koblenz, from where the WFG employees are still committed to the interests of companies today.

First subsidies from the WFG
February 1977

The WFG is responsible for promoting the commercial economy, tourism and municipal projects to improve infrastructure for the district of Mayen-Koblenz. The district provided the WFG with funds for this purpose for 12 years. On February 1, 1977, the first funding guidelines were adopted, laying the foundations for funding in the following years. As early as 1978, one of the first grants was approved for the development of the industrial area "Mayener Tal" (Mayen).

First-time sponsorship of the Mayen Castle Festival
July 1982

The history of the Mayen Castle Festival began back in 1980, when Genoveva Castle was transformed into a stage to celebrate its 700th anniversary. The performance of the romantic Genoveva saga thrilled the audience to such an extent that the castle festival became a permanent fixture in Mayen. Today, they are an integral part of cultural life and are still supported annually by the WFG as a supra-regional cultural event.

Inauguration of the Waldsee Rieden dam
August 1982

The reservoir, with its adjacent vacation and leisure area, is intended to provide impetus for tourism development. However, despite intensive efforts, no investors for a vacation home area could be found for a long time. In 2003, a regional group of investors then applied with a concept for a vacation and leisure park. In the meantime, around 50 vacation homes have been built on the 1.4 hectare site, as well as a restaurant, sanitary facilities and parking spaces. The WFG has also supported the tourist development of the leisure area and the design of the lake's surroundings.

Mr. Michael Knopp becomes WFG Managing Director
July 1984

As a committed junior member of the district administration, Michael Knopp succeeds Managing Director Dr. Kröll in the management of the WFG.

Restaurant program of the district
April 1985

When new WFG funding guidelines came into force on 01.04.1985, the Mayen-Koblenz district's hospitality program was launched. The aim of this special program was to improve the quality of catering and accommodation establishments in Mayen-Koblenz. Financial incentives in the form of grants were used to encourage the modernization of businesses. In 1986, for example, the Hotel Pistono, a family-run business still operating in Dieblich today, received support to set up a conference room.

First location atlas of the WFG and the district
October 1985

Mayen-Koblenz Your location - On October 1, 1985, the first WFG location atlas for the Mayen-Koblenz district is presented as a marketing tool for commercial and industrial sites. Available industrial and commercial sites in the entire district are listed here. The WFG used it to attract companies willing to settle here. Interested companies were given individual advice on the choice of location and settlement. In this way, the WFG succeeded in promoting economic development in Mayen-Koblenz, true to its service promise.

First-time WFG participation in crafts fair in Koblenz
April 1987

The HWK organized a trade fair in Koblenz to support the regional skilled trades. The WFG used this to present the district as a business location, but also to cultivate contacts with exhibitors, companies from the district, politicians and institutions, thereby increasing its level of awareness.

Start of the "Bimsprogram"
June 1987

In the post-war years, the demand for building materials, especially pumice stones, was high and the building stone and earth industry in Mayen-Koblenz prospered. However, the dominance of this industry and the monostructure had its downsides. In the 1980s, demand declined, which led to an economic downturn in the region. The WFG tackled this problem. The monostructure was to be counteracted by attracting future-oriented and non-cyclical industries. The "Bimsprogramm" was launched by the district with financial support from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The district acquired entire pumice plants, including the land. By dismantling the companies and reactivating the sites as commercial locations, the basis was created for later success in attracting new businesses. One example is the site of the former Schwall company in Mendig, where the Plastipak company was established.

Creation of a WFG location brochure
March 1988

The aim of the WFG is to raise its profile in order to provide even more effective support to local authorities and the commercial sector in the district. The first edition of a WFG location brochure in German and English has therefore been published, particularly for outdoor advertising and participation in trade fairs etc.

Establishment of Continental PET Deutschland GmbH production in Mendig
January 1989

In 1989, the first major settlement within the framework of the structural program for the pumice industry took place on the former site of the Schwall company in the Mendig industrial estate (see 1987 start of the pumice program). The company Schmalbach-Lubeca, now Plastipak (formerly Continental PET Deutschland GmbH), created a new production facility for PET bottles with the establishment of a PET bottle plant. Coca-Cola was one of the first major customers to introduce these to the German market.

The establishment of the company is a positive example of targeted and cooperative collaboration between the administration, local authority, WFG and the company. After the investment plans were finalized in May 1989, the ground-breaking ceremony took place in July 1989 and production started in January 1990. The WFG coordinated the approval procedure in close cooperation with all parties involved, so that a period of less than one year could be achieved until the start of production.

Expansion of supra-regional Maifeld cycling and hiking trails
December 1989

The closure of the railroad line was taken as an opportunity to create a supra-regional cycle path from Mayen across the Maifeld. The WFG supported the financing and implementation. At the same time, the 1990s saw a strong focus on the expansion of cycling and hiking trails in the Mayen-Koblenz region, creating an attractive district-wide network. The Maifeld cycle/hiking trail has created a link between the towns of Münstermaifeld, Polch, Ochtendung and Mayen. At the Polch junction, the trail continues either to Ochtendung and Bassenheim or to Münstermaifeld.

Basic decision of the WFG on the guidelines for the large-scale development of industrial and commercial sites
December 1990

A survey on space requirements confirmed the WFG's experience. An increasing need for space per workplace combined with the dynamic growth of many companies in the region triggered an increasing demand for industrial properties. Despite the reactivation of sites through the so-called Bim program, there was a lack of large, contiguous, immediately available industrial and commercial sites in the district. The WFG supervisory board and the district committee voted in favor of a strategic realignment of the location and land supply.

This was realized both on the district's own land and in close cooperation with the municipalities in the district and with the support of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. One example of this is the "Polch success story", which was dubbed by the Rhein-Zeitung newspaper with the designation and settlement of the "Im Gohl" industrial estate located directly at the A 48 freeway exit. In several development stages since then, companies have settled here and numerous jobs have been created.

Establishment of Niesmann + Bischoff GmbH in Polch
January 1993

1950s - Camping fever took hold in Germany. Elfriede and Hugo Niesmann caught the bug and founded their travel sales company for caravans. At that time, the company was located on Industriestrasse in the Mülheim-Kärlich business park, spread over two plots of land. Due to increased demand for the company's products, it soon became imperative to expand the production area. However, realization at the previous location was not possible. So the search began for a completely new location. The WFG succeeded in presenting various alternative locations, whereupon the owners decided on the Polch site in 1991. In 1993, Niesmann + Bischoff GmbH was one of the first companies to settle in the new industrial area in Polch. Today, Niesmann + Bischoff GmbH is a subsidiary of the Erwin Hymer Group.

Rita Emde becomes authorized signatory of WFG
May 1993

The business administration graduate from the Fachoberschule Rheinland-Pfalz, Koblenz department, joined WFG back in 1991. Initially entrusted with the company's business management and tax law matters, she became increasingly involved in management consultancy. She is regarded as a contact person for companies and is involved in various networks. On 15.05.1993 she was appointed authorized signatory of WFG.

First position established for project manager to oversee approval procedures
January 1995

Thanks to the good supply policy, many new companies and companies willing to expand were able to settle in Mayen-Koblenz, thus creating numerous jobs. However, more was needed for customer-oriented settlement support: the increasing complexity of building permit procedures led to the creation of the position of "Project Manager for the Support of Approval Procedures" at the WFG in 1995. Ms. Agnes Hessel was the first project manager in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Bendorf urban renewal process
January 1995

In 1993/1994, four companies dependent on the refractories industry closed down in Bendorf, which led to a serious crisis and the loss of around 600 jobs. In an urban renewal process, the complete reorientation of the town was then initiated and a holistic urban development concept was drawn up. The WFG provided support not only financially but also in terms of personnel and accompanied the revitalization process.

Relocation of the Brohl Wellpappe headquarters to Mayen
January 1996

Brohl Wellpappe has eight locations in Germany and the Netherlands. The Mayen site is home to the head office as well as corrugated board production and processing, flexo direct printing and flexo pre-print processing, digital printing, packaging development and reprographics. As there was no scope for expansion at the Brohl site, the first production areas were initially relocated to Mayen in 1989. This was followed in 1996 by the complete relocation, which was accompanied by an attractive location offer from the WFG and the town of Mayen.

New establishment "Die Lohner's" in Polch
January 1996

The bakery "Die Lohner's" was founded in Cochem in 1912. The company has grown steadily since it opened in 1976. From a once small store in Cochem, the bakery moved to Hambuch. In 1995, the company again faced a growth threshold. Together with the Polch Economic Development Agency / VG Maifeld and the WFG, it was possible to relocate the company to Polch. In 2005/2006, an adjoining plot of land on the "Im Gohl" industrial estate was acquired to expand the business.

Settlement of Schmitt-Stahlbau Andernach
January 1996

The origins of the "Schmitt-Stahlbau" company began in 1924 with the founding of a locksmith's shop, which continued to develop its product range over the decades. An important milestone was the production of jetties for day trip boats with the start of the Moselle canalization. In 1996, the company moved from Moselkern to its new location in the Andernach harbor industrial area. The WFG supported the company during this relocation process. A series of boats was also built there. The company name was adapted to the company's actual field of development and is now "Schmitt Boote und schwimmende Anlagen GmbH - SBS". As the company continued to expand, new production areas were added at the Andernach site.

Marketing of the Nürburgring business park
January 1997

The special feature of the business park at the Nürburgring is that it is an inter-municipal business park with the participation of three administrative districts as well as three municipalities and local communities. Between 1997 and 2001, the team from WFG and Strukturentwicklungsgesellschaft am Mittelrhein mbH successfully marketed the commercial sites and attracted companies with an affinity for racing. Capricorn Composite GmbH, which has invested €16 million at the Nürburgring since 2002, is a prime example of this.

Foundation of the A 61 industrial park special-purpose association
October 1999

Plans by the city of Koblenz envisaged the development of industrial areas at the Koblenz freeway junction with the integration of a freight transport center and thus directly adjacent to the district of Mayen-Koblenz. A feasibility study commissioned by the WFG analyzed further development opportunities in the district. As a result, together with the district municipalities of Bassenheim and Kobern-Gondorf and the city of Koblenz, the district of Mayen-Koblenz developed an inter-municipal industrial area on the territory and founded the special-purpose association I-Park A 61 for development and marketing. The industrial area is characterized by its exposed location at the A61 and A48 freeway junction. Ideal for companies in the logistics and production sectors. The WFG has worked hand in hand with companies to attract them to the industrial park, assisting investors/companies with approval procedures and providing professional advice. With the development of the industrial park, the WFG was able to attract national and international companies such as Amazon, Lidl, Hermes etc. to Mayen-Koblenz and create numerous new jobs in the region.

Reactivation of Didier Bendorf brownfield site
January 2000

After the collapse of the economic structure in the town of Bendorf in 1992/1993, the town gained a new attractive profile. Through its involvement in the Economic and Steering Committee, the WFG was able to accompany the town of Bendorf on its way to the top. In addition to the reactivation of the Concordia site, the construction of an attractive shopping center on the former Didier industrial wasteland was of particular importance for the town's development. Kaufland opened a hypermarket on a main area of 4,000 m², thus securing the retail offering in Bendorf.

Establishment of Laserline GmbH in Mülheim-Kärlich
January 2001

What began with a small team at TZK Koblenz has developed into a global manufacturer of high-power diode lasers in a company history spanning 22 years: Laserline GmbH. The company's rapid growth made it necessary to expand its capacities. In cooperation with the WFG, local authorities and support from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the company moved to a 1.5-hectare site in Mülheim-Kärlich in 2002. Laserline is still regarded as an innovative laser manufacturer today.

Relocation of NIKA Optics to GE in Winningen
January 2003

Founded in 1991, NIKA Optiks GmbH sells spectacle lenses to the German opticians' trade. Due to the company's continued expansion, the premises in the town of Winningen became too small for the approximately 25 employees, so the company sought talks with the local community and the WFG in the summer of 2002. Thanks to the constructive cooperation and project management by the WFG, the company found a new location in the new industrial estate, right next to the Winningen airfield. A well-coordinated approval process made it possible to start construction in August 2003 and move in 2004.

First-time participation in Expo Real in Munich
october 2003

The WFG took part in the Expo-Real real estate trade fair in Munich for the first time in 2003. Together with the WIR-Nord network - the business development agencies in northern Rhineland-Palatinate - the WFG was present at the joint stand of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Promotion of Sayner Hütte
September 2005

The Sayner-Hütte: today it is a magnificent testimony to the cast iron era. The Bendorf foundry once supplied the entire Rhineland with all kinds of iron. The world-class architectural highlight has now been extensively renovated and is applying for UNESCO World Heritage status. The WFG is supporting the renovation process and is delighted that this innovative engineering site has been given a new lease of life.

Preparation of a feasibility study for the Mendig airport conversion project

october 2006

The positive development of the Rhine port of Andernach repeatedly required investments to modernize the logistics area, but also to increase throughput, particularly in the container sector. At the same time, a sustainable contribution was made to achieving the overarching transport policy goals of "traffic avoidance" and "modal shift". The city of Andernach calculated around 16.5 million euros for the logistical expansion. The federal government provided funding for transshipment facilities and combined transport. The WFG was able to secure the co-financing of the project with a grant.

Industry analysis and subsequent competence field development in MYK
January 2008

Finding starting points for cooperation between regional companies and thus increasing regional value creation - this was the question the WFG pursued with an industry analysis in 2008. The search was launched for the region's key industries and "individual talents". Both the number of employees and the value chain in the packaging, logistics and IT sectors were identified and led to the launch of the regional industry initiative. To this day, the WFG organizes company visits and specialist events as part of the initiative in order to network companies, transfer know-how and improve value creation in the region.

Opening of the first eleven dream trails
April 2008

The WFG saw the vision of developing Mayen-Koblenz into a "hiking region" with premium quality as an opportunity to create a unique and non-interchangeable offer and highlight. In the first stage, eleven day and half-day tours - four in the Rhine Valley and seven in the Eifel - were implemented in 2008. More followed, so that today there are 27 dream trails in the Rhine, Moselle and Eifel regions. Enjoyable hikes of the highest quality: exciting landscapes alternate with adventurous steep slopes, dense forests with wild meadows, romantic stream valleys with breathtaking views of the Rhine and Moselle valleys. The WFG's vision has come true.

Reactivation of the geyser in Andernach
May 2009

The geyser in Andernach: the world's highest cold-water geyser with a water fountain of over 60 meters, located on the Namedyer Werth in Andernach. It was even entered in the Guinness Book of Records in 2008. As early as 1997, the WFG supported the initial idea of reactivating the geyser and the subsequent exploratory drilling. Today, the geyser with its visitor center opened in 2009 is a unique highlight in the region for young and old.

First company settles in the A61 industrial park - Mittelrhein-Verlag
July 2009

At the end of October 2008, the WFG and the office of the special-purpose association held initial talks with Mittelrhein-Verlag regarding the establishment of a printing center. Mittelrhein-Verlag is the leading media house in northern Rhineland-Palatinate with the Rhein-Zeitung and its local editions, advertising papers, social media channels and ultra-modern printing plants. A modern printing center was built on the 2.8-hectare site in accordance with the building permit of July 9, 2009, followed by further construction phases and, most recently, the relocation of the Mittelrhein-Verlag administration. The publishing house's decision to settle in the industrial park was mainly due to the excellent infrastructure and the direct location at the highway junction as well as the large areas available for logistics and production. The establishment of Mittelrhein-Verlag as the first company in the industrial park is the result of fruitful inter-municipal cooperation between the WFG and the economic development department of the city of Koblenz and the municipality of Weißenthurm as well as the local communities of Bassenheim and Kobern-Gondorf.

Special program "Quality campaign for accommodation and catering establishments"
September 2010

The set goal of sustainably improving the quality and performance of hotels, guesthouses, vacation homes and apartments, campsites and restaurants was achieved, thereby strengthening the gastronomic infrastructure along the dream trails and dream paths.

Bendorf port expansion
January 2011

A port - an important location factor. A modern and efficient port represents a considerable advantage for the economy. However, expansion and renovation measures were necessary to maintain competitiveness. After a new quay wall was built in the lower part of the port in 2011 and 2012, the upper quay wall was also renovated later. With the renovation of the hundred-year-old quay wall, it was possible to ensure that ships can dock without any complications.

Amazon relocates to the A61 industrial park
october 2012

The WFG worked hard to attract Amazon to the region. The central location in Europe, the good regional employee potential and the excellent connection to all major highways as well as the good cooperation with the city of Koblenz were the main reasons why the company ultimately chose Mayen-Koblenz as its location. The relocation has created over 1,000 long-term jobs in the first three years after opening, as well as up to 2,000 seasonal jobs. Construction work began in December 2011 and was completed in October 2012. The building permit process was completed in a fast-paced manner in just 4 weeks.

Ökoprofit - First companies are certified
January 2013

"Saving costs through environmental protection" was the motto under which the city of Koblenz and the district of MYK launched the ÖKOPROFIT project in 2011/2012. In addition to the nationwide consulting firm ARQUM from Munich, ten companies of different sizes and from different sectors took part in the first round: craft and industrial companies were represented as well as service providers and social institutions. A mixture that ensured an intensive exchange during the course of the project.

Over the course of a year, information on a wide range of topics was provided, the current situation in the companies was recorded and analyzed, options for action were identified and individual catalogs of measures were developed. All of this culminated in certification as an ÖKOPROFIT company at the beginning of 2013 (see image).

The award marked the conclusion of the project, during which the foundations for the introduction of an environmental management system were laid. Further rounds with new companies followed. A new round is currently underway with newcomer and club companies from the Koblenz, Mayen-Koblenz, Bad Kreuznach and Mainz areas.

The company was founded by Robert Fincke back in 1977. There was no scope for further expansion at the site in Mülheim-Kärlich. The company therefore contacted the WFG and asked for support in finding a location. A suitable location was found: 9,000 square meters in the "Vor dem Gülser Weg" industrial estate in Bassenheim. The ground-breaking ceremony took place in 2017 and the land was sold by Strukturentwicklungsgesellschaft am Mittelrhein mbH, which sold the last plot of land it owned to Fincke.

WFG homepage gets a new look
January 2018

Economic development is increasingly focusing on the holistic development of the location. The availability and quality of so-called hard location factors such as conveniently located, attractive space are part of the basic offer. However, these factors alone are no longer enough to operate successfully in the 21st century. The region must remain as attractive as it already is. This includes bringing living and working together. This is also what the WFG's new slogan developed in 2017, "Strong economy. Good life.", which has also been conceptually expressed as part of the relaunch of the WFG website since 2018. The "good life" plays an increasingly important role in the WFG's projects.

To this end, a cooperation agreement was concluded between the WFG and Prof. Thomé (Koblenz University of Applied Sciences) for the pilot project on the future-oriented development of rural areas.

Commissioning of a commercial and industrial area potential analysis for MYK
June 2019

The report was used to evaluate existing industrial and commercial areas and to determine the potential for new designations, including initial recommendations for action. The results showed that there is a need for 8.3 ha of commercial space per year in the district. By 2035, this means a total commercial space requirement of 141 ha. Following a detailed examination of the land use plans, the demand therefore exceeds availability. In future, the WFG would therefore like to not only drive forward the activation of existing land potential, but also look for new development areas.

Math, computer science and the like are fun too... STEM subjects are often not very popular among schoolchildren, but there are excellent job opportunities here, as the demand for industrial and technical specialists has grown considerably. However, the WFG will continue to focus on inspiring people for STEM professions in the future.

Not forgetting the variety of restaurateurs. How did it all begin? When the first lockdown began at the start of 2020, leckerMYK was developed as a platform for pick-up and delivery offers from restaurants in the Mayen-Koblenz district.
