Tourism is an important economic factor in the district of Mayen-Koblenz and is becoming increasingly important. This is demonstrated by the continuous rise in the number of guests and overnight stays in recent years. However, the coronavirus pandemic had a significant impact on the tourism industry in 2020. As a result of business closures during the lockdown phases in spring and at the end of the year, the number of guests and overnight stays fell many times over in 2020.

In 2020, 226,192 overnight guests visited the district and booked 580,083 overnight stays. Compared to the previous year, the number of guests fell by 42.2 % and the number of overnight stays by 36.6 %. At 88.5 %, visitors from within Germany represent the largest group.

The number of guests and overnight stays is consistently above the state average and the average for all districts in Rhineland-Palatinate. After a sharp increase in the "Buga year" of 2011, the figures initially fell again and then increased every year, so that the Buga figures were exceeded from 2014 onwards. Due to coronavirus, however, the figures fell sharply in 2020.

In 2020, 200,168 guests came from Germany, making them the largest group at 88.5 %. A total of 26,024 guests (11.5 %) from abroad visited Mayen-Koblenz in 2020.

The number of overnight stays in Mayen-Koblenz is continuously above the state average, but was below the average for all districts in Rhineland-Palatinate until 2013. Since 2014, these have been above the average for all districts in Mayen-Koblenz. However, after an increase in recent years, the number of overnight stays in 2020 fell by 36.6% compared to the previous year due to coronavirus.

The decline in bed occupancy in 2016 is the result of the special situation in 2015, in which student overnight stays in the city of Mayen were included in the total number of overnight stays and this led to a significant increase compared to 2014 and automatically resulted in a deterioration compared to 2016. At 31.4%, occupancy in 2019 was only slightly lower than in 2015. In 2020, bed occupancy was only 20.5% due to the pandemic, a decrease of 10.9% compared to the previous year.

Around 580,000 overnight stays were recorded in the district of Mayen-Koblenz in 2020. Due to coronavirus, there was a decline of around 334,500 overnight stays (-36.6%) compared to the previous year. The highest number of overnight stays was recorded in August and September after the lockdown. Despite the pandemic, the number of overnight stays in 2020 was above the average for districts in Rhineland-Palatinate, with the exception of April and December.
The biggest drop was in April, with a decline in overnight stays of -91.6%

Of the approximately 334,500 overnight stays, 200,168 were booked by German guests and therefore accounted for the largest share.
Just under 11.5% of overnight stays were booked by guests from abroad, 97.3% of which were from other European countries. The most important countries of origin were the Netherlands with 34,519 overnight stays, Belgium (9,113) and Poland (5,596). The USA had a share of 0.1% with just under 467 overnight stays.
