Knowledge management

An investment in the future.

"

Securing knowledge for companies - Particularly against the backdrop of demographic change, it is clear that the importance of knowledge management in companies will increase in the future. The task is to make employees' knowledge transparent, available and secure.

With this introduction, companies in the region were called upon by the WFG for the first time in 2010 to identify appropriate company projects, the conception and implementation of which could be supported. The Competence Center for Knowledge Management at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences (KOWM) - under the direction of Prof. Dr. Siegfried Schreuder and with the assistance of Dipl.-Ing. Dirk Reiländer, now KM4.0 Consulting UG - has supported 93 projects since then. Following the conclusion of the ten-year "Knowledge Management" funding round, which was accompanied and supported by the WFG, the validity of the above assessment has been impressively confirmed. A total of 39 companies of various sizes and sectors took part in annual project rounds of around ten individual company projects with a moderated exchange of experience.

Practical experience of regional companies

All projects were based on individual problems, so that specific solutions delivered immediate benefits for the companies. Various methods were used in the process:

  • Identification and preservation of relevant knowledge
  • Strategic planning and modeling of suitable knowledge structures
  • Participatory, agile development of knowledge-based applications

"

"The knowledge management project initiated by the WFG was a real benefit for us and we really got something out of the project. The topic was latent in the company, but nobody really tackled it."

Prof. Dipl. Ing. Thomas Kriesmer, Technologie Institut Medizin GmbH, Andernach

At the beginning of the project, the focus was usually on the technological and organizational design of suitable infrastructures. Projects were characterized by the fact that knowledge portals or central technical solutions (wikis, blogs, streams, company pedias, etc.) were developed and introduced by the companies. Building on this, numerous apps for mobile applications on smart devices were developed in subsequent years. For example, Alufinish GmbH & Co. KG realized a digital application for truck inspection with automated report generation and evaluation. In addition, the focus of the knowledge management projects was on the end-to-end digitalization of processes. In some cases, significant cost and time savings were achieved through corresponding "system break-free" solutions.

The conclusion of the knowledge management project for all participants and organizers: knowledge management is not a "flash in the pan", but the beginning of a strategic transformation process geared towards the consistent use of the resource "knowledge" in the company.
